Dr. Nitin Gupta is a magna cum laude and phi beta kappa graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. Dr. Gupta completed his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.
Following his internship and residency in internal medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Gupta completed clinical and research fellowships in gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He also completed a research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Recently, Dr. Gupta served as Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in addition to several other academic and leadership positions. He has co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Science, Nature, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and New England Journal of Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the American Gastroenterology Association with which he has previously held leadership and board positions.
An important part of his practice includes performing screening colonoscopy for colon cancer prevention, upper endoscopy for reflux symptoms, and esophageal dilations for difficulty swallowing.
In addition to general gastroenterology, Dr. Gupta is a specialist in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and microscopic colitis). He actively conducts scientific research focused on advancements in diagnostic testing and clinical trials with new drug therapies.
For patients with inflammatory bowel disease, he performs a special staining colonoscopy, called chromoendoscopy, using a dye that improves the detection of pre-cancerous lesions.
When he is not treating patients, he spends time educating practitioners throughout the country on the various treatment nuances of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
