Dr. Patel graduated magna cum laude and was a Presidential Scholar at the University of Georgia in Athens. He then graduated cum laude from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, where he received the prestigious Academic Achievement Merit Scholarship. Dr. Patel later completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, where he received the Resident Research Award. Dr. Patel completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, and while there, was named an Assistant Professor of Medicine. 

Dr. Patel has been invited to present at numerous national conferences, including Digestive Diseases Week in 2012, where he was the ASGE Presidential Plenary Speaker. In addition, he has been widely published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. He has also co-authored several book chapters, including a chapter on esophageal tumors in the highly regarded Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease.

Dr. Patel is an active member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. 

In addition to general gastroenterological procedures, Dr. Patel has received training in performing ablative treatments for Barrett’s esophagus, pH monitoring for GERD, video capsule endoscopy, and single/double balloon endoscopy. He has special clinical interests in improving the quality of colonoscopy, Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal motility disorders, and small bowel diseases. He also has an interest in teaching, and he currently holds academic appointments with both Emory University School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine.

Dr. Patel joined Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates in 2014.
