Bharat K. Puchakayala, MD

Dr. Puchakayala is a graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India, where he received a combined Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. While there, he was awarded the gold medal in Microbiology for having the highest score on the university examination and was selected for the short-term research studentship by the Indian Council of Medical Research. After completing an internship at Osmania General Hospital in his hometown of Hyderabad, he came to the United States and pursued a master’s degree in public health at Missouri State University in Springfield. 

He further completed his residency in internal medicine at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He then worked as an internist and was the director of education at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru, Illinois, before moving to New York City to complete fellowships in hepatology research and gastroenterology at the New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Prior to gaining experience and training in gastroenterology, Dr. Puchakayala worked as a clinical research coordinator at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and as a locums hospitalist at Seton Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, New York.

He has presented on digestive topics at national conferences and has been published in various medical journals including Gastroenterology, Gundersen Medical Journal, World Journal of Hepatology, and Digestive Diseases and Sciences. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American College of Physicians.

In addition to general gastroenterology, Dr. Puchakayala has a clinical interest in early detection of cancers in the GI tract, liver diseases, and inflammatory bowel disease. He is fluent in both Hindi and Telugu and joined Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates in 2017.
