Histotechnician: Pathology Lab Marietta, GA 30060

Summary of Duties: 
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received, and ensures correct labeling of all materials.
  • Performs routine immunohistochemically studies with appropriate controls for cell markers on paraffin sections using a variety of both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies and a wide variety of specialized techniques. 
  • Embeds tissue in paraffin, sections paraffin blocks, performs H&E staining, Cover slips prepared slides manually or utilizes automated cover slipping systems 
  • Prepares all reagents, buffers and stains utilized in laboratory and maintain acceptable working volumes. 
  • Organizes slides for distribution to the Pathologist.
  • Maintains inventory of a large number of reagents and other supplies in Lab. Follows established protocols for proper storage and maintenance of quality control for all reagents and other supplies. 
  • Maintains equipment in proper working order and obtains maintenance as necessary. 
  • Identifies problems and brings to the attention of more senior laboratory staff. Troubleshoots with supervision. 
  • Assists in safety training of all laboratory personnel. This includes maintaining appropriate documentation and protocols.
  • Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. 
  • Follows all CLIA Patient Safety Goals. 
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.  
High school diploma or equivalency required. A.S., B.S. or B.A. in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NAACLS accredited histology technician training program.  1 year of experience as a histology technician.  HT (ASCP), certification eligible.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to embed, section, and stain routine tissue with acceptable quantity and quality. 
  • Knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology, mathematics, and basic computer use.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to cope with an extremely busy work schedule associated with wide variety of techniques which must be handled accurately and expeditiously.
  • Must function independently in dealing with specimens and their proper handling. 
  • On own initiative, ability to identify potential problems and trouble shoot problems as necessary. 
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact effectively with co-workers and department staff. 
  • Ability to work under general supervision. 

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment; travel within the Northern Metro area required.
