Dr. Kongara is a graduate of the accelerated combined six-year Bachelors and Medical degree program at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, where she served as president of the American Medical Student Association. She completed her internship and residency at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY. During her fellowship in gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, Dr. Kongara trained with nationally recognized experts in GERD, colorectal diseases, and motility disorders, as well as GI issues more commonly associated with women’s health, such as irritable bowel syndrome. She also served as an instructor in the Department of Medicine.

In 1999, she was appointed Associate Professor for the School of Medicine & Health Sciences Center at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (NY) and joined the medical staff at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY.  At Winthrop Hospital, she was named both Director of the Women’s Support Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders and Director of Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Motility Center and served on the Women’s Task Force Committee for the hospital. In 2006, she was named Associate Chief and Director of Clinical Operations for the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition.

In addition to her special interest in women’s digestive health and colon cancer screening, Dr. Kongara treats patients for a wide variety of esophageal and colonic disorders. She lectures frequently and has been widely published in leading journals including The American Journal of Gastroenterology, The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, and Practical Gastroenterology.

She is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Medical Association, the American Motility Society, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Kongara joined AGA in 2010
