Dr. Karsan is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He completed both his internship and residency at Boston University Medical Center and served as Chief Medical Resident there.
Following his residency, he completed clinical fellowships in both gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center. While at UCLA, Dr. Karsan received additional specialized training in advanced endoscopic procedures, including ERCPs, interventional endoscopy, and liver transplantation. He also conducted clinical research in gastroenterology with several world-renowned physicians.
At UCLA, he was nominated for Teaching Fellow of the Year by the Department of Internal Medicine and received both the American Society of Transplantation Fellow Travel Award and the American Gastroenterology Association Gastroenterology Research Group Award.
Dr. Karsan has been the guest speaker at various medical conferences for more than a decade. In addition, he has been featured as a medical expert on WebMD and has been interviewed in print by the Associated Press and also has been featured in television and radio interviews. Dr. Karsan has had numerous manuscripts published in medical journals and serves on the editorial boards of several gastroenterology journals. He has contributed chapters to several books relating to gastroenterology and is the author of a gastroenterology board review textbook, published in 2011. As a result of its success, he has been asked to write a second version, planned for publication at the end of 2012.
Dr. Karsan is an active member of several professional organizations and serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Emory University School of Medicine. He joined Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates in 2003 and is actively involved in clinical research.
