A graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, Dr. Shaw received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He then began his military service, completing his internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, as well as his fellowship in gastroenterology. Dr. Shaw served as staff internist at the Frankfurt Army Regional Medical Center in Germany and chief of gastrointestinal diagnostic services at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado.

After completing his service in the Army, Dr. Shaw came to Atlanta where he has been in private practice since 1986. He served as the chief of gastroenterology at St. Joseph's Hospital for four years and was chairman of St. Joseph's Hospital Department of Medicine for five years. He previously served as assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and in the same capacity at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Shaw is the recipient of several honors, including the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He also has been named one of Atlanta's "Top Doctors" by Atlanta Magazine. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. In 2010, he was named Medical Director of the Center for GI Imaging, a division of Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates.

Dr. Shaw joined the practice in 1990.
